When it Comes to Mastering Successful Union Negotiations, Not All Employee Benefits Consultants Are Equal

Navigating union negotiations is a complex task that requires specialized expertise and a deep understanding of both labor relations and the unique needs of a unionized workforce. For both private and public sector organizations including cities, counties, municipalities, government entities and school districts – partnering with an employee benefits consulting firm who specializes in this area is crucial for achieving favorable outcomes. Here’s why.

Extensive Experience with Unionized Populations
At BSI, we have worked with dozens of clients that feature a unionized workforce. Our public sector team has participated in negotiations involving more than 120 union contracts at both local and national levels. Our experience engaging with major unions such as the Teamsters, UAW, PSEA, SEIU, FOP, and IAFF among others provides us with valuable insights into the nuances of union dynamics, which is essential to negotiate effectively.

Tailored Service Model
Our service model is designed to address the unique challenges faced by clients in managing employee benefits. With each client being assigned a dedicated account team we focus on providing personalized support, tailored to the complexities of multi-union and non-union environments. Our seasoned account managers possess a wealth of experience in managing healthcare benefits for clients in both the private and public sector, ensuring each client’s needs are met.

Expertise in Labor Relations
One of the key advantages of working with BSI is our ability to assist clients with labor relations issues, particularly those related to healthcare disputes. We understand that negotiations can often become contentious, especially when it comes to employee benefits. Our team excels in mediation, providing data-driven strategies and participating in negotiation sessions to facilitate constructive dialogue. Our proactive approach not only fosters positive labor relations but also helps all parties reach mutually beneficial agreements.

Proven Success: The County of Northampton Union Negotiation
A prime example of our union expertise is our collaboration with the County of Northampton, which began in 2017. In 2019, we recommended implementing a high deductible health plan (HDHP) paired with a Health Savings Account (HSA). This initiative required negotiating with 11 different union contracts but ultimately delivered significant benefits to employees and the county alike. Our team attended several union meetings to ensure County employees understood the benefit of making a change and had the opportunity to ask clarifying questions prior to the change taking place. The HDHP allowed for lower monthly premiums, resulting in immediate cost savings, while the HSA provided employees with tax advantages that empowered them to make informed decisions about their healthcare expenses.

Since the implementation of this program, over 70% of County employees have enrolled in the HDHP with HSA, and the County is projected to save $10 million by the end of the next year. This success story is one of several involving our team’s expertise in navigating the complexities of union negotiations effectively and applying benefit plans that can yield significant savings.

Working with an employee benefits consulting firm that specializes in navigating union negotiations is not just a matter of convenience, it’s essential for the long-term success of labor relations. In an ever-evolving employee benefit landscape, partnering with a knowledgeable broker can make all the difference. BSI’s expertise, tailored service model, and proven success in managing complex labor relations ensures that our clients can effectively manage their employee benefits programs while fostering positive labor relations and significant cost savings.
