11 ways to manage stress and support others who are struggling

Have you ever felt the weight of the world on your shoulders, that never-ending knot in your stomach, and the overwhelming urge to just hit the ‘pause’ button on life? That’s the unmistakable grip of stress, and you’re not alone.

International Stress Awareness Week, celebrated this week from the 30th of October to the 3rd of November, offers an opportunity to shed light on this worldwide issue. This global initiative aims to educate people about the importance of recognizing and managing stress.

Stress, when left unchecked, can lead to various health problems, including anxiety, depression, and even physical ailments such as heart disease. Awareness is the first step toward effectively dealing with stress.

To effectively combat stress, individuals need practical tools and strategies at their disposal. Here are some ways to relieve stress:

  • Mindfulness and Meditation: Mindfulness and meditation can help you stay present, calm your mind, and reduce stress. To practice mindfulness and meditation, find a quiet space, focus on your breath, and observe your thoughts.
  • Exercise: Physical activity is a natural stress reliever. Regular exercise releases endorphins, known as “feel-good” hormones, reducing stress and boosting mood.
  • Healthy Eating: A well-balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can positively impact your mood and energy levels. Avoid excessive caffeine and sugar, as they can increase stress.
  • Time Management: Effective time management and organization can help reduce the stress that comes from feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities.
  • Relaxation Techniques: Deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, aromatherapy, and warm baths can all contribute to relaxation and stress reduction.
  • Social Connections: Spending time with loved ones and maintaining social connections can provide emotional support during stressful times.

Supporting someone who is stressed is equally important. Here are some ways to be there for friends and family dealing with stress:

  • Listen: Offer a listening ear without judgment. Sometimes, all someone needs is to express their feelings.
  • Empathize: Try to understand what they’re going through and express empathy. To show empathy, practice active listening and validate their feelings.
  • Offer Assistance: Ask how you can help, whether it’s with tasks, providing information, or simply being present.
  • Respect Boundaries: Be mindful of their need for space if they require it, but also check in and reassure your support.
  • Recommend Professional Help: If their stress is overwhelming or persistent, suggest they seek help from a mental health professional.

International Stress Awareness Week reminds us that while stress is inevitable, it doesn’t have to define our well-being. With awareness, practical strategies, and a supportive community, we can effectively manage stress and lead healthier, more balanced lives. Whether it’s for yourself or someone you care about, remember that stress awareness is the first step towards a happier and more relaxed life.
