8 Dimensions of Wellness: Emotional Wellness

Why do we take the time to change our band-aid every day when we have a papercut, but oftentimes repress our emotions when having a bad day? Emotional wellness has a significant influence on our overall well-being, yet it’s often placed on the back burner while we manage our fast-paced lives.

Our emotions influence how we perceive and interact with the world around us, impacting our relationships, decision-making, and overall happiness. Taking care of our emotional health is vital for leading a fulfilling life and building resilience during challenging times.

Emotional wellness is defined as the ability to understand, express, and manage our emotions in a healthy manner. It involves being aware of our feelings, accepting them without judgment, and finding appropriate ways to cope with stress and challenges. Emotional wellness doesn’t mean being happy all the time; it’s about acknowledging and processing the full range of emotions we experience in life.

If we are neglecting our emotional wellness, it can significantly affect our mental health. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 1 in 4 people globally will experience a mental health disorder at some point in their lives. Moreover, depression and anxiety are among the leading causes of disability worldwide, affecting over 264 million people.

Want a challenge? Make a goal to incorporate one of the following tips into your life. Remember, give yourself grace, it will take time to make habits.

  1. Practice Mindfulness: Try a new mindfulness activity such as meditation, deep breathing, or mindful journaling
  2. Identify Your Emotions: Take time to recognize and label your emotions. This can help you understand your reactions and make healthier choices.
  3. Seek Support: Reach out to friends, family, or a mental health professional if you’re struggling, you are not alone.
