Eating Healthy During the Holidays

As the holiday season approaches, we can often find ourselves reaching for the freshly baked cookies, filling up our wine glass again, and going for seconds during holiday dinners. Although we eagerly anticipate certain meals or desserts throughout the year, maintaining a focus on healthy eating can pose a challenge.

Here are some tips to help you enjoy the holiday festivities without compromising your health goals.

  • Plan and prioritize – Before attending a family gathering or holiday party, plan your meals for the day. Ensure your earlier meals are balanced and nutritious, focusing on lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. In addition, it’s important to eat breakfast rather than “saving calories” for a holiday meal.
  • Mindful eating – Before you take a bite of your meal, it’s important to enjoy the flavors and textures. By slowly savoring each bite, your body will recognize when it’s full, preventing overindulgence.
  • Portion control – If you find yourself struggling with portion sizes, use a smaller plate for your meal. Using a smaller plate tricks your brain into perceiving the portion as larger than it actually is. Additionally, wait twenty minutes before considering a second serving to allow your brain to recognize your fullness level.
  • Choose wisely – Select healthier options whenever possible. Fill your plate with vegetables, salads, and lean proteins like turkey or fish. Opt for roasted or steamed dishes rather than fried or heavily sauced foods.
  • Bring your own dish – If you’re attending a gathering, offer to bring a healthy dish. Prepare a veggie platter, fruit salad, or a nutritious side dish. This guarantees the presence of a healthy choice, providing you with an option to enjoy without feeling guilty.
  • Stay hydrated – Stay hydrated throughout the day by drinking water. This can help control your appetite and prevent overeating during holiday meals. In addition, hydration helps with the process of digestion, which reduces the chances of indigestion or bloating.

Remember, the holiday season is about joy, gratitude, and spending time with loved ones. Embrace a balanced approach to eating that includes both indulgence and healthy choices. By implementing these strategies, you can enjoy the holiday foods while maintaining your commitment to health and well-being.
